Over the last fifteen years, democracies have become more unstable. Some have failed and suffered authoritarian regression. Others have seen their party systems unravel. Anti-establishment forces have emerged, especially on the right. Polarisation has taken hold in the politics of our time, and there seems to be a diffuse malaise and a loss of expectations about what democracies can achieve.

Multiple explanations have been proposed to understand all these phenomena related to democratic instability: growing income inequality, the reaction of the losers of globalisation, economic insecurity, the search for refuge in the nation, the expansion of social networks and digitalisation, among others. Trying to understand the causes of this imbalance has become an urgent task.
