Almost 75 years after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the theoretical consensus on the great progress represented by its vote contrasts with the unevenness with which it is applied around the world. Recent events such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the arms build-up it has generated, or the Chinese government's attempt to redefine human rights in order to legitimise its dictatorial regime, are some of the latest examples to highlight the weakening of the culture of peace and democratic values at a global level.

Kenneth Roth, who recently stepped down as executive director of Humans Rights Watch after many years, discusses the challenges that remain in defending human rights globally and in the current context. Through his work, Roth has contributed to the transformation of the international landscape, asserting the discourse of human rights and peace and making abuses visible. How to renew the consensus on human rights in the face of the challenges of our time?
