The compatibility of capitalism and democracy has long been debated. In some periods they have been seen as complementing each other, in others as repelling each other.

If we understand neoliberalism as the dominant ideology of contemporary capitalism, according to which the functioning of markets must be kept out of politics, what role is left for democracy? Do democratic systems still have the capacity to exercise control over economic affairs? And if neoliberalism promotes radical forms of individualism, how do the people, the collective subject of democracy, operate? Can there be popular self-government in neoliberal societies?
