The old Mercat del Born is one of the first and most important buildings built with iron in Barcelona. It was designed in 1873 by the master builder Josep Fontserè i Mestre and built between 1874 and 1876 by Josep Fontserè and the engineer Josep Cornet i Mas. The structure of pit columns and metal horses was manufactured by La Maquinista Terrestre y Marítima.
