Ashley Walters
Photographer and visual artist
Fine Arts Coordinator in the Department of Visual Arts at Stellenbosch University. Walters completed his Fine Arts studies at the University of Cape Town, where he received the Michaelis Prize and a Tierney Fellowship. Working across digital and analogue photographic processes, non-linear film, sculpture, installation and drawing, Walters’ work often blends documentary with creative storytelling and explores narratives around social change, identity, notions of home and the impact of historical trauma on communities. His work has appeared in publications including Laying Foundations for Change (2014), Rogue Urbanism: Emergent African Cities (2013), Aperture: Platform Africa (2017), Rencontres de Bamako: Biennale Africaine de la Photographie. 10ème edition (2015), Strange Cargo: Essays on Art (2021) and Evergreen Review. He has participated in numerous international exhibitions and has exhibited extensively in South Africa, including at the Norval Foundation and Iziko SANG.
