Elaine Vilar Madruga

Writer, poet and playwright

Considered one of the leading voices in contemporary Cuban and Caribbean literature, her work moves between fantasy, horror, dystopia and fable to explore power relations, the body, desire, motherhood and the many forms of violence that permeate social life. She holds a degree in Theatre Arts, specialising in Playwriting, from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. She has published novels, poetry, plays and children's and young adult literature, translated into several languages. Her international reputation grew with La tiranía de las moscas (Barrett, 2021), a novel about family, authoritarianism and dissent that received the Cálamo Prize for Book of the Year. She later published Las cavidades (Bookmate, 2023) and El cielo de la selva (Lava, 2023), a dark fable about motherhood, sacrifice and control over the female body that won both the Nollegiu Prize and the 42 Prize for the best work in Spanish. In 2026 she published La piel hembra (Barrett), a choral epic set in an isolated community where every woman mysteriously becomes pregnant and claims to be carrying the new messiah. Through this story, Vilar Madruga explores faith, identity, power, memory and the control exercised over women's bodies.
