Rupali Gupte

Architect, artist and urbanist

Based in Mumbai, she is co-founder, director and professor at the School of Environment and Architecture (SEA), and a partner, alongside Prasad Shetty, at the multidisciplinary practice BardStudio. She has been a senior research fellow at the University of Brighton (UK) and a member of the urban research collective CRIT. Her work draws on extensive research into contemporary architecture and urbanism in South Asia, with a particular focus on housing, urban forms, tactical spatial practices and the role of gender in shaping housing. She is currently working on the reconstruction, retrofitting and upgrading of self-built neighbourhoods in Maharashtra. Her interdisciplinary practice takes many forms, including writing, drawing, multimedia works, installations, curating, conversations, walks and spatial interventions. Her work has been exhibited both in India and internationally, including at the 56th Venice Biennale, the São Paulo Biennial of Art and Architecture, the Seoul Biennale, Dhaka Art Summit, MACBA, MAAT (Lisbon), Mumbai Art Room, Devi Art Foundation, Project 88 and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art. She has participated in conferences, juries and evaluation committees around the world.
