Xisi Sofia Ye Chen
Catalan filmmaker
The daughter of Chinese immigrants who settled in Barcelona in the post-Olympic years, she grew up speaking Qingtianese, Mandarin, Catalan and Spanish. She holds a degree in Humanities and a master’s degree in Creative Documentary from Pompeu Fabra University. Her work embraces cultural hybridity, using it as a starting point to construct personal narratives through film and theatre.
Her first short film, Xiao Qiang, primer somni (2020), explores her family’s region of origin through the form of a fable. She has also worked in theatre as stage director and dramaturg for Bereshit (Laboratori Malnascuts, Sala Beckett, 2017). Her first feature-length documentary, La noche de la infància (2025), received the Final Cut Award at D’A Film Lab Barcelona and the Grand Jury Prize at Visions du Réel (2026).
