Franco-Iranian writer Maryam Madjidi talks to writer and educator Youssef El Maimouni about diaspora, social class and the contradictions of the promise of upward social mobility.

Can effort and talent overcome any class barrier? Can education and schools reduce inequalities in opportunity arising from social background, language or a diverse family history?

In Maryam Madjidi’s literary work, from Marx y la muñeca (Minúscula, 2018) to La edad ridícula (2026), she transforms her own experiences of exile, assimilation and social mobility into fiction, along with the forms of shame, uprootedness and exclusion that often accompany the promise of equal opportunities. Challenging reassuring narratives about the successes of integration, Madjidi shows how upward social mobility does not always erase the marks of one’s origins or fully resolve the question of belonging.

In conversation with writer and educator Youssef El Maimouni, Madjidi reflects on the consequences and contradictions of growing up in the diaspora.

Session with simultaneous interpretation.

Free admission. Limited capacity.
