Joan Magrané

Composer and music critic with a distinguished international career

He studied at ESMUC, the Kunst Universität Graz and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. He has also been a resident at the Villa Medici in Rome, a member of the Casa Velázquez in Madrid, and composer-in-residence at the Palau de la Música Catalana, the CNDM and L'Auditori Barcelona. Deeply committed to music outreach, Magrané is the author of Antologia sentimental de la música catalana (Peu de Mosca, 2022). He has composed music across all genres, with works including the oratorio Tenebrae Responsoria (2023), the violin concerto L'or de l'atzur (2022), the monodrama Intérieur (2021) and the chamber opera Diàlegs de Tirant e Carmesina (2019). The musicians and artists who have influenced his creative process range from Joaquin Desprez, Claudio Monteverdi, Richard Wagner and Joan Guinjoan to Ausiàs March, Joan Roís de Corella, Blai Bonet, Jaume Plensa, Santi Moix and Perejaume. He has received awards including the 31st Queen Sofía Prize for Musical Composition from the Ferrer de Música Foundation (2014). His works have been performed by Isabelle Faust, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Quatuor Diotima, Trio Fortuny, Quartet Gerhard, Kebyart, Graindelavoix, Les éléments, the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya and the Orquesta Nacional de España, among others.
