Kelly Gillespie
Political and legal anthropologist
Specialising in criminal justice in South Africa, she has a particular interest in its current role in perpetuating apartheid relations. She has been a lecturer and researcher at the University of the Western Cape since 2018 and previously spent a decade at the University of the Witwatersrand, where she was Head of the Department of Anthropology from 2015 to 2017. She completed her PhD at the University of Chicago with a thesis on South African prisons and currently writes and teaches on law and justice, urbanism, sexualities, race and social justice praxis. She is co-founder of the Johannesburg Workshop in Theory and Criticism (JWTC), an experimental project focused on rethinking the work of critical theory beyond the Global North. She has been involved in processes of decolonising the university in South Africa and has supported student movement activism as well as curricular and disciplinary reconstruction. She also collaborates on popular education projects supporting a wide range of social justice initiatives.
