What and who determines whether someone belongs to a city, to a community? What strategies do queer people develop in urban environments that are often hostile to them? In this conversation, we present a range of projects focusing on bodies and people who, from the margins, challenge the idea of belonging to the city.
In this final panel of An Urban Interregnum, we examine what it means to be and to belong in the city, establishing a dialogue between Delhi and Johannesburg. We pay particular attention to how bodies inhabit space, find refuge, move and circulate, negotiate their (in)visibility and are read by others, while also observing those around them.
- Through microfictions, Priya Sen documents individual experiences of leisure, safety, aspiration and desire across different spaces of consumption in Delhi, from shopping centres and retail markets to fairs.
- Also in Delhi, Gautam Bhan addresses the challenges faced by non-normative people when looking for housing.
- Vikramaditya Sahai reflects on dispossession and life on the margins through the figure of Mona Ahmed, a prominent figure in Delhi’s trans community.
- Kelly Gillespie explores Johannesburg’s post-industrial present and the difficulties and survival strategies of people who have been excluded from the labour market.
An Urban Interregnum. New vocabularies and formations of collective life from the Global South is an international research project bringing together artists, researchers and activists from India, South Africa and Brazil to explore emerging phenomena in urban contexts around the world.
