Lindokuhle Sobekwa
Photographer
South African photographer. He belongs to a generation of South African photographers born free, after the country’s first democratic elections in 1994. His notable works include the series Nyaope (2014-2018), which portrays the health crisis caused by drug abuse in his community as a consequence of violence. In 2017, Sobekwa was selected by the Magnum Foundation to develop the project I Carry Her Photo with Me, a personal exploration of the memory of his sister, his family history and the broader implications of disappearances in South Africa. Other works include the photocollage series Witnesses: 50 Years of Humanity (2021), which portrays the reality of refugees in camps in Kenya. His work has been exhibited internationally. In 2022, he opened his first museum exhibition at Huis Marseille in Amsterdam with Umkhondo. Tracing Memory, a confrontation with the deep scars left by apartheid and colonialism. Sobekwa is a full member of Magnum Photos and has received the John Kobal Foundation Fellowship and the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize.
