How are volatility and change navigated in the urban environments and social relations of the Global South? What new forms of family and community emerge from absence? In the second session of An Urban Interregnum, we explore absence and volatility as dynamics that shape relationships.
Absence, disappearance, transience and volatility persistently shape the lives of people on the peripheries of the Global South. In this session, we will approach these dynamics from different perspectives and contexts and through a range of disciplines and forms, from photography to anthropology, gender studies and the study of urban ecosystems.
- Lindokuhle Sobekwa examines the still-visible traces left by decades of extractivism in Johannesburg and investigates the lives that disappeared in the gold mines.
- Allan Cunha explores the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the outskirts of São Paulo.
- In the same Brazilian context, Teresa Caldeira examines emerging forms of family, parenthood and masculinity, focusing on the growing phenomenon of single mothers and absent fathers.
- Tatiana Thieme explores the volatility of river life in Nairobi and the regeneration of these ecosystems, which are home to many communities.
An Urban Interregnum. New vocabularies and formations of collective life from the Global South is an international research project bringing together artists, researchers and activists from India, South Africa and Brazil to explore emerging phenomena in urban contexts around the world.
Session with simultaneous interpretation.
