Ninety years after the coup d’état that triggered the Spanish Civil War, historians Julián Casanova and Xavier Domènech join journalist Sílvia Marimon to discuss the narratives and silences surrounding this pivotal moment in our history, which continues to shape the present.
How is collective memory constructed? Why do the Spanish Civil War and Francoism continue to be contested in the public sphere and used for political purposes? Julián Casanova, author of España partida en dos (Crítica, rev. ed. 2022/2026) and other key works on this period, highlights the institutional and political shortcomings of the Transition and democracy whose effects are still felt today. In this conversation with Xavier Domènech, the two historians reflect on the desire to forget that permeated the Transition and the disputes over memory and recognition that remain unresolved. At a time when the far right is reviving the legacy of the dictatorship, Casanova and Domènech stress the need to continue fighting for memory and the future of democracy.
This session is part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Editorial Crítica.
