On the 50th anniversary of the Teatre Lliure, Victoria Szpunberg, Israel Solà and Juan Mayorga reflect on the role of theatre and culture in contemporary democracies, the preservation of memory and the construction of new political imaginaries.

What role can theatre play in a context marked by the rise of authoritarianism, the polarisation of the public sphere and the precarious material conditions of artistic creation? How can culture open up spaces for encounter, critical thought and political imagination?

Taking as a starting point the legacy of the Teatre Lliure and the companies that helped create spaces of cultural and democratic dissent during Spain’s Transition to democracy, the conversation will connect that history with the challenges of the present. From an intergenerational perspective, playwrights Victoria Szpunberg, Israel Solà and Juan Mayorga discuss the public role of the performing arts, the relationship between art and collective memory, and theatre’s democratic capacity to generate critical thought and explore other ways of being together.

Free admission. Limited capacity.
