What new urban phenomena are emerging in cities of the Global South? And which of them can also be found in cities of the Global North? In this session, the curators of the An Urban Interregnum project talk to geographer Ruth Wilson Gilmore about contemporary urban transformations from a critical perspective.

A sense of uncertainty permeates major cities around the world. Over the past year, the CCCB’s An Urban Interregnum project has explored emerging phenomena in cities of the Global South arising from the profound transformations that are, in turn, reshaping these urban spaces. Increasingly, these phenomena are shared across the world. The project began with a question: what forms of urban life can we identify and describe that might help us make these ongoing transformations visible? Over the course of a year and a half, the project’s participants have explored tacit changes, forms of collective action, and the repertoires and languages people use to communicate and reflect on their lives in these cities.

At the end of a day in which participants will present the findings of their research, geographer Ruth Wilson Gilmore will join Teresa Caldeira, Edgar Pieterse and Gautam Bhan, the project’s curators, for a conversation about the emerging forms identified by the researchers and artists through their work.

Session with simultaneous interpretation.

Free admission. Limited capacity.
