Juan Mayorga

Playwright, theatre director and essayist

One of the leading figures in contemporary Spanish theatre, his work has been translated and performed internationally. He holds a PhD in Philosophy and a degree in Mathematics, and currently heads the Chair in Performing Arts and the Master’s Degree in Theatre Creation at Carlos III University of Madrid. Since 2022, he has also directed the Teatro de La Abadía in Madrid and the Corral de Comedias in Alcalá de Henares.

His plays include Hamelin, El chico de la última fila, La tortuga de Darwin, La paz perpetua, El cartógrafo, Animales nocturnos, Los Yugoslavos and La gran cacería. His many accolades include Spain’s National Theatre Award, National Dramatic Literature Award, the Valle-Inclán Award and the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature. He is a member of the Royal Spanish Academy.
