Playwright Juan Mayorga presents La gran cacería, a theatrical piece that reflects on colonial violence, memory and the contradictions inherent in the idea of Europe through a nocturnal journey across the Mediterranean.
What keeps us awake at night? Is it possible to contemplate the great achievements of our civilisation without acknowledging the violence that made them possible? What stories remain inscribed in the landscapes, ruins and images we inherit from the past?
In La gran cacería, Juan Mayorga takes the famous Roman mosaic at the Villa del Casale in Sicily as the starting point for a nocturnal journey across the Mediterranean and through some of the founding myths of European culture. During a sleepless night, the images in the mosaic transform into questions about power, domination, colonial violence, the relationship between humans and animals, and the shadows that run through European history. Through a theatrical monologue, Mayorga invites us to reflect on memory, responsibility and the forms of violence that continue to inhabit the present.
