Writer Mariana Enriquez talks to editor Valerie Miles on the closing afternoon of the Biennal de Pensament about the city at night as a space of imagination, memory and unease.
By day, we see more. By night, we imagine more. When darkness falls, the city’s outlines begin to blur and it ceases to be merely a functional space of movement: streets, buildings and margins become charged with presences, fears and stories that remain hidden during the day.
In Enriquez’s work, stories emerge precisely from everything society would rather not look at. Her fiction is populated by marginalised neighbourhoods and characters, spectres and traumatic memories that break into the present, forcing us to remember what remains unresolved. From Las cosas que perdimos en el fuego and Los peligros de fumar en la cama to Nuestra parte de noche and Un lugar soleado para gente sombría, Enriquez has turned the fantastic into a way of interrogating inequality, history and marginality.
In conversation with Valerie Miles, Enriquez will reflect on the narrative power of the night, the relationship between architecture, memory and imagination, and the ways in which literature can give form to what societies attempt to erase.
