Are we no longer interested in the truth? What are the most dangerous forms of discourse, and how can we challenge them? How has the far right turned a reactionary message into an appealing narrative for younger generations?
This conversation brings together two women who work with language in different ways and who, over the past year, have paid particular attention to how contemporary forms of fascism use discourse and to the ways language shapes our view of the world and draws us towards extreme, highly codified political positions. Through poetry and translation, in Míriam Cano’s case, and linguistics and discourse analysis, in Laura Camargo’s, they examine how words not only reshape the worlds we share, but can also be used to destroy them. When Donald Trump said that there were neighbourhoods where migrants were “eating the cats”, was it simply a ridiculous claim that made us laugh on social media for a few days, or was it a deliberate message? With Míriam Cano and Laura Camargo, we will see why words need to be taken seriously.
Free admission. Limited capacity.
