What is freedom? And, above all, what is freedom not? Why do we need to define it? What happens when we trivialise it? Why must freedom always be understood in relation to justice, ecology and sustainability? Is it simply about living without restrictions, or does freedom also require us to participate in public life, to be heard and to leave a mark on our shared memory?
At a time when neoliberalism is gaining ever more ground, freedom is being invoked to promote populist policies that exclude others and contribute to the destruction of the planet. Freedom is used to expand the rights of capital and property, but also to deny climate change and oppose any form of regulation.
Against this backdrop, there is a clear need for a public debate that reclaims an understanding of freedom that cannot be appropriated by those who put democracy at risk. As part of the Biennial, this debate will bring together two leading thinkers who have written and reflected extensively on this question throughout their distinguished careers: Fina Birulés and Wendy Brown, moderated by Begonya Saez Tajafuerce.
Session with simultaneous interpretation.
Free admission.
