The classical conception of democratic states, since its conceptualization during the Enlightenment, is based on the separation between religion and state. This is the premise that underpins much of the Euro-Western democracies and has served as a model for other contexts. This activity aims to contribute to this discussion by reflecting on the various ways in which religion and politics intertwine and how they propose different ways of understanding what a democratic society entails.
The activity will take place in two discussion formats. The first is a conversation between two international experts about the connections between democracy and spirituality that occur in certain contexts around the world. The second part will consist of a roundtable where members of various religious communities in Barcelona will reflect on the internal forms of democracy that religious organizations adopt.
Activity organized by the Office of Religious Affairs.
