Why is there an increasing emphasis on improving self-esteem as a way of solving problems that affect us all? What does it mean to frame poverty, the climate crisis, precarity or the crisis of democracy as matters of individual responsibility? Why don't we politicise distress beyond medication and therapy? Why don't we talk about class struggle?
In his essay A la mierda la autoestima, dadme lucha de clases (Bauplan), writer, comedian and intellectual provocateur Jean-Philippe Kindler argues that neoliberalism has turned politics into a matter of personal self-management, replacing social and collective transformation with a culture of self-esteem, personal entrepreneurship and the relentless pursuit of individual wellbeing.
He will discuss these issues with philosopher Marta Echaves, author of the recent essay Químicas piedades (Cielo Santo), and philosopher Adrià Porta, who specialises in contemporary forms of subjectivity.
Session with simultaneous interpretation.
Free admission. Limited capacity. Admission will be prioritised on a first-come, first-served basis.
