How can the classics help us understand the challenges of the present? What can a work like 1984 tell us today about the manipulation of information, the construction of narratives or the influence of the messages we consume every day? How do fake news, post-truth and algorithms relate to the questions Orwell was already asking decades ago?
Aimed particularly at students aged 14 to 18, this activity takes George Orwell’s 1984 as a starting point for reflecting on the construction of narratives and the manipulation of information in today’s digital ecosystem. The session combines a dramatised reading of excerpts from the work, performed by Berta Giraut, with a participatory workshop led by Jordi Borràs, based on the questions he explores in Alimentar la bèstia.
Through activities, questions and contemporary examples, the session invites young people to critically examine the relationship between language, power and truth. The activity is complemented by educational materials to be used before and after the session.
*This activity has been curated in collaboration with La Casa dels Clàssics.
