Drawing on her new book, Silk Road, actress, playwright and writer Angélica Liddell talks to Luna Miguel about her artistic career and the fundamental role that experiences of beauty and suffering play in her work.
Gaijin is a Japanese term with pejorative connotations used to refer to non-Japanese people; in a gesture of reclaiming the insult, it is also the name of the protagonist of Angélica Liddell’s novel Silk Road (Malas Tierras, 2026). Like a gaijin wandering through the neighbourhoods of Tokyo, Liddell recounts the distinctly contemporary experience of feeling like a stranger on the city streets, of experiencing the alienation of our times. At the same time, the book reflects on the profound impact of beauty and the impossibility of speaking about it when it overwhelms us in an experience that, for Liddell, brings us closer to suffering or even cruelty.
In this session, Liddell, one of the most avant-garde playwrights on the international scene, talks to writer Luna Miguel about some of the fundamental themes running through her artistic career, marked by darkness, cruelty, the grotesque and lyricism as a means of illuminating the depths of the human condition.
