How can we think from within institutions without becoming trapped in institutional rhetoric? How can culture intervene in political life without being reduced to cultural policy? What spaces can we open up so that, beyond representation, direct action and collective deliberation become possible?

At a time when the distance between cultural institutions, their audiences and society appears to be growing, this conversation explores the forms of engagement, listening and conflict that can emerge from within institutions. The question is not only what culture represents, but also what it can set in motion, what decisions it can enable and what collective imaginaries it can help shape.

Valentín Roma, director of MACBA, and Valerio Rocco, director of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, have combined theoretical reflection with the management of cultural institutions and engagement in the public sphere. Drawing on their experiences, they will discuss the tensions between culture, representation and decision-making, and how cracks within culture can become spaces for knowledge and new forms of connection.
