Architect Rafael Moneo talks to his biographer, Carmen Díez Medina, about the book Rafael Moneo. Construir las ideas (1954-2024), an unprecedented journey into the heart of his work and its relationship with the history and transformations of contemporary architecture.
How are ideas built? How can architects intervene in a city shaped by layers of history without simply imitating them or imposing themselves upon them? What ensures that a building endures and becomes part of collective life and imagination?
Rafael Moneo’s work is characterised by its changing, symbiotic nature: from the National Museum of Roman Art in Mérida to the Kursaal in San Sebastián and the extension of the Prado Museum, his projects adapt materials to the uses of each building and its relationship with its surroundings. For Moneo, architecture is not merely a way of occupying a space, but also of interpreting it, transforming it and making it habitable.
Drawing on the sketches, works and ideas collected in Rafael Moneo. Construir las ideas (1954-2024) (Acantilado, 2026), Moneo and Díez Medina discuss architecture’s responsibility towards the city and the lives that shape it.
